Effective Reflection Photography Tips and Amazing Examples

Reflection photography is not an alien term in the photography arena. It is the spicing agent that transforms lifeless shots to amazing photographs. There is no doubt that reflection changes the overall feel of an image  and you can easily explore the cloudless opportunities presented by a reflective surface.

Any shiny and reflective surface like glass or water may be an excellent source of such photographs. Reflection photography is a matter of creativity where you have to brainstorm ideas and dig deep into  surroundings to explore the hidden beauty. It is also a specialized scientific platform because you should know photography ideas and techniques  about right camera angles  to capture a great shot.

Reflection Photography Tips

  • Climate

For successful reflection photography, you need to go out  on a day when light supports you well. It isn’t particularly important that climate is too clear but make sure that wind is not a hindrance. It is the clear climate that favors a beautiful shot when you go for reflection photographs.

  • Water Reflection Photographs

To take a reflection shot, water is the right medium. To get better and rich colors, it is better to shoot close to the water surface. When you have an interesting subject like bright sky, it is a good idea to place water in the foreground so that it will spice up the image and lighten it. You can use ND grad filter to bring the right blend of balance balance if the sky’s   too bright.

  • Abstract Reflection

It depends on the surface to achieve a smooth-finished photograph. If the surface you select is smooth or still water, you will have more chances of getting a pretty shot. If you are planning to use artificial light, make sure that the angle and amount of light you choose suits with the surface. For complete reflections, flat and smooth surface without marks and fingerprints would be ideal.

  • Try to remove ripples

Ripple over the water surface is always a hindrance to take complete reflection photographs. Even on still water, you may find ripples.  By using a longer shutter speed, you can reduce or smooth out a few ripples. It is better to take a single shot with a quicker shutter speed and take another shot with longer shutter speed. Later combine both the shots in your photo editing software so that you will get a perfect photograph.

  • Camera angle

Based on the angle you choose for the capture, the outcome also changes. The symmetry plays a prominent role in such photographs. Try to take horizontal as well as vertical shots of the same subject. To balance the exposure and darkening of the image to match the reflection, using an ND grad filter is the better choice.

  • Use of artificial reflective surfaces

You can go for man-made reflective surfaces to achieve desired results. Many reflective surfaces such as steel and glass are the real source of such photographs.
